Optical Fiber Grating Sensors and Their Applications

Donghui Zhao, Ph.D. (Postdoc of Dr. Michael Kissick)
Department of Medical Physics, UW-School of Medicine & Public Health, Madison, WI USA

This talk will review optical fiber grating sensor technologies. Their basic concepts and physical principles will be introduced and summarized. In particular, the talk will focus on long period gratings (LPGs) written in special fibers, such as D-shaped fibers, and their applications for bend-sensing techniques in detail by showing some experimental results that are general to a wide variety of applications. Their potential medical applications and possible advantages will be discussed for sensing real time patient, organ, or tumor motion for a very new type of radiotherapy optical guidance. These technologies may also be useful for sensing patient motion for other medical imaging applications.
