A Quick Look at Two Types of MR

Mark Griswold, PhD
Professor, Departments of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering, Case Western Reserve University

In this lecture, I’ll give a short overview of the two types of MR that we’re doing in our lab right now: Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Mixed Reality. I will cover our recent work using magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) to diagnose and characterize different disease processes throughout the body. I will show some recent results that point to our ability to specifically characterize multiple tumors and to identify and characterize epileptic lesions compared to conventional MRI. In the second part of the talk, I will switch gears to describe how mixed reality is changing the face of education in medicine and beyond. I’ll summarize our work transforming our anatomy education to be almost completely digital, where our recent work shows students learning nearly twice as fast and retaining knowledge better as compared to a conventional cadaver lab. I’ll also describe how we moved our entire anatomy curriculum online in just a few weeks in response to the
COVID-19 pandemic.
