Uncovering Lost Ideas and Other Musings: Near Misses or Missed Opportunities?

Bryan Bednarz, PhD
Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison

This presentation will reflect upon my journey moving through the academic ranks. It is meant to celebrate ideas that once occupied my brain that fell by the wayside either because of waning momentum or lack of support. More importantly, the presentation will explore the concept of failure in the contextual background of a research enterprise that rewards "perfectionism". It will discuss the impact that this environment has on the creative minds of our younger generation of researchers. The take-home message from the presentation is simple: it is okay to fail. More failures in research will lead to more discoveries.
